Minaret of JAM - Shahrak District - Afghanistan

Minaret of Jam - Shahrak District
The Minaret of Jam lies in the centre of rugged valley at the convergence of the Rivers Harirud and Jamrud.

1888 – Spotted by Sir Thomas Holdich, a geographer

1943 – Spotted by Abdullah Khan Malekyar, the Governor of Herat

1957 – Andre Maricq

2002 – Included to the world heritage sites list.

It is believed that the Minarets were built as a symbol of Islam’s victory. There were nearly 60 towers built between the 11th and the 13th century. The minaret is covered by complex geometric designs, including quotations from verses of the Koran in Kufic script. The whole structure is built using baked bricks.

The Minaret now faces threat due to soil erosion and illegitimate excavations. A lot of antiques have been plundered by tomb robbers. Now the Minaret has started to tilt. But measures are taken to stabilize it.
